Edmonton Indy
EDMONTON, Alberta -- IndyCar Series
drivers will find the 1.96-mile, 14-turn
Edmonton City Centre Airport circuit is
distinctively different from the
2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course -- last weekend's venue du jour.
● Airport runways and taxiways
to rolling terrain.
● Left- and right-hand 90-degree
corners to sweeping turns.
● Concrete and tire barriers to sand
runoffs.
● Majority of racing surface is
75-feet wide to about 50 feet.
Both are physically and
strategically challenging in their own
right, which contributes to the depth and
breadth of the IndyCar Series schedule.
This week, it's the inaugural Rexall
Edmonton Indy in provincial capital - a
venue that transitions from Champ Car to
Indy Racing League stewardship.
Eight IndyCar Series drivers entered
in the 95-lap race July 26 (5 p.m. ET;
ESPN and indycar.com) have competed on the
circuit in the event's three years, which
leads to whether they'll enjoy a decided
advantage. Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing's
Justin Wilson would like to think so.

Brisco Wins Mid Ohio!!!
LEXINGTON, Ohio - All Ryan Briscoe
needed - all he was hoping - was for the
racetrack to remain green for the final 20
laps of the second Honda Indy 200 at
Mid-Ohio presented by Westfield Insurance.
"Finally, something went our
way," the driver of the No. 6 Team
Penske car said after claiming his second
victory of the season with a commanding
victory over pole sitter Helio Castroneves.
It's the 27th time in
IndyCar Series history - and second time
in eight days -- that teammates have
finished 1-2. It's the eight time for Team
Penske; the first since 2005.
Scott Dixon in the No. 9 Target Chip
Ganassi Racing car finished third on the
2.258-mile, 13-turn circuit that was
washed clean by a couple of late-morning
thunderstorms, though his points lead was
sliced from 63 to 58 over Castroneves
heading to the inaugural race in Edmonton,
Alberta, on July 26 (5 p.m. ET, ESPN and
indycar.com).
KV Racing Technology teammates Will
Power and Oriol Servia completed the top
five.
Two weeks earlier at Watkins Glen
International, Briscoe started from the
pole and was in the hunt before an
incident involving Dixon relegated him to
12th. In the first non-oval of
the season - on the streets of St.
Petersburg - Briscoe dropped 15 positions
to 23rd because of contact.

LEBANON, Tenn. - Target Chip Ganassi
Racing crew members performed an impromptu
rain dance on pit lane with 40 laps
remaining in the Firestone Indy 200.
Maybe it helped - in their minds.
Team managing director Mike Hull
rolled the dice by keeping the Nos. 9 and
10 cars on the track while other
contenders pitted under a moisture caution
on Lap 148.
That proved decisive - though more
so because of a miscommunication between
the pit stand and the No. 9 Energizer car
driven by Scott Dixon.
Dixon tied an IndyCar Series record
with his third consecutive victory at
Nashville Superspeedway and teammate Dan
Wheldon finished second as the race was
red-flagged after 171 of 200 laps
complete.
It was the 100 automobile racing
victory for Chip Ganassi Racing (22
in the IndyCar Series), and Dixon held
aloft his third hand-painted Gibson guitar
trophy.

That's two races in a row in which
the driver of the No. 26 car for Andretti
Green Racing was involved in a multi-car
incident with less than 10 laps remaining.
This time, it potentially cost the
third-year IndyCar Series driver his
second career victory.
Scott Dixon was the beneficiary.
Dixon, driving the No. 9 Target Chip
Ganassi Racing car that started on the
pole, led Helio Castroneves across
the finish line under caution after
Andretti's entanglement with the No. 17
Ethanol car driven by Ryan Hunter-Reay on
Lap 223 of 228. Castroneves' Team Penske
teammate, Ryan Briscoe, came back from a
lap down to finish third and Dan Wheldon
improved seven positions to fourth in his

Davison prevails in timed race at
Mid-Ohio
By Dave Lewandowski
indycar.com
LEXINGTON, Ohio - In the past three
Firestone Indy Lights races, three
different Sam Schmidt Motorsports drivers
have stood atop the podium.
James Davison is the latest and the
seventh different winner in the series
this season.
Davison, starting seventh in the No.
11 Lifelock/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car,
prevailed on a treacherous rain-soaked
2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course over Wade Cunningham in the No. 24
Alliance Motorsports car under caution in
a 40-minute timed race. Twenty laps (half
the scheduled distance) were recorded in
the second of the doubleheader race
weekend.
Davison actually was the beneficiary
of the victory when race leader and pole
sitter Jonny Reid pulled onto pit lane one
lap too early.
"I was thinking, 'Has he made a
mistake? I'm pretty sure we haven't taken
the checkered flag and we need to take
it,' '' said Davison, whose previous best
finish was sixth at Milwaukee. "I
asked, 'Have I just won this thing' and
they were like 'Yeah, you're showing P1 on
the timing.' ''
Reid didn't have radio
communications with the pit stand when the
final caution was called on Lap 19. He was
passed for the lead by Mitch Cunningham on
Lap 17 and regained it when Cunningham's
No. 33 Mo's Gold entry spun off course in
Turn 1 of that white flag lap.
I am really disappointed," said
Reid, driver of the No. 9 Integra
Motorsports car who finished ninth.
"I just came into the pits; there is
really no excuse for it. Basically, the
yellow came out so I thought the race was
over and it was the done. I have never had
a race finish under yellow like that
before and it just caught me off. I wasn't
thinking.
"What confused me as well was
that the safety car came on in the back
straight and then came off the track again
and I slowed down. I switched into first
gear and started following it and I pulled
off. I didn't really know what to do
and I thought the other drivers were going
to follow me and they didn't. So I
lost and it is a huge disappointment. I
feel a little bit embarrassed about it,
but what can I do? It is going to just
make me more hungry for a win in the
future."
It was a rough race for half of the
22-car field as a slick track created
numerous spins and off-course adventures -
among those the No. 27 Automatic Fire
Sprinklers Inc. entry driven by Raphael
Matos. He won Race 1 a day earlier to slip ahead
of Richard Antinucci for the championship
points lead (363-360). On Lap 5 of Race 2,
the No. 27 car spun in Turn 3 and was
struck from behind by the No. 17 Team E
Patriot Bank car driven by Bobby Wilson.
Matos' car sustained suspension damage,
but he returned and finished 18th.
Antinucci also had a few chills and
spins and finished 14th after
starting second. With a week off to
collect their thoughts and car parts,
Antinucci (376) has a one-point advantage
over Matos. Ana Beatriz, who won a week
earlier at Nashville Superspeedway, is 44
points back in third after finishing fifth
in the second Mid-Ohio race.
"I had a very similar race to
everyone. It was very chaotic,"
Davison said. "I went off down at
Turn 4 at the end of the straight and went
all the way down to the bottom of the
gravel trap and somehow didn't get
beached. I dropped back to about 15th
and I just said to my engineer, 'Look I'm
just going to drive this thing, keep it on
the track, and lay it on the line if I
have to.'
"We've been very strong at
times; literally zero luck. I mean, here
we are. It's great."
Pablo Donoso, driving the No. 22
TMR-Cristal-Xtreme Coil Drilling car,
recorded a season-best third place, while
Cyndie Allemann posted a season-best
fourth place in the No. 18 American Spirit
car. She started 17th.
"The team gave me a really good
car when things were really wet,"
said Donoso, who claimed his sixth
consecutive top 10. "It was a
crazy race. I don't know what Johnny Reid
did, but I'm happy for our
team."

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - Raphael Matos
said before Race 1 of the same-day Corning
Duels that he was focusing on the
"big picture" - aka the
Firestone Indy Lights championship.
A victory on the 3.37-mile, 11-turn
Watkins Glen International circuit brought
that into focus. Matos, who started from
the front row in the No. 27 Automatic Fire
Sprinklers Inc. car for AFS Racing/Andretti
Green Racing, recorded a 2.1290-second
victory over Richard Antinucci in a race
shortened one lap because of a one-hour
limit.
Jeff Simmons, driving the No. 2 TMR/Xtreme
Coil Drilling car, started and finished
third, and Ana Beatriz advanced two
positions to fourth in the No. 20 Healthy
Choice/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. Pablo
Donoso finished fifth in the No. 22 TMR/Xtreme
Coil Drilling car and Logan Gomez was
sixth in the No. 23 Menards Guthrie Racing

The top six finishers will be

for which teams had three hours to prepare
(and in some cars repair) their cars.

By indycar.com staff
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - With two Firestone
Indy Lights races on the same day at
Watkins Glen International, Richard
Antinucci was protective of the No. 7
Lucas Oil/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car in
Race 1.
After finishing second, he also was
protective of his firesuit during the
podium celebration.
"You can't let your emotions go.
You can't spray champagne because your
suit will stink for the second race,"
he said.
On the podium again after Race 2, the
champagne flew everywhere and Antinucci
was loving it. Antinucci, who finished
second to Raphael Matos in the first race
on the 3.37-mile, 11-turn course, turned
the tables by winning by 0.7202 of a
second.
Antinucci charged from the fifth
starting position (the top six finishers
in Race 1 were inverted on the grid for
Race 2). He overtook teammate Ana Beatriz
in Turn 1 of a Lap 9 restart for the point
and maintained the advantage for the
remaining 20 laps. Beatriz finished third,
Logan Gomez was fourth and Pablo Donoso
fifth for the third consecutive race.
"I was pretty happy with second
(in the first race)," said Antinucci,
who recorded the second victory of the
season. "That's what we deserved in
the first. We did a really good job
in the second race. You know, we were
stronger on the restarts on cold tires.
Once we got going on a regular
pace, maybe after a couple laps, we were
getting caught in about two-tenths a lap. I
wasn't trying to set the world on fire the
last couple laps, just make sure I did
everything right and had enough gap to win
the race. No one caught points on us
this weekend, which is excellent.

Battistini wins on race day at Iowa.
NEWTON, Iowa - For 101 laps, Dillon
Battistini was searching high and low for
opportunities to overtake race leader Arie
Luyendyk Jr. Finally, one materialized
when patience prevailed.
The Panther Racing took advantage of
Luyendyk being held up by slower traffic
in Turn 3 of Lap 102 to claim the point.
He then held off Luyendyk on a white flag
restart and went on to win the Jeld-Wen
100 at Iowa Speedway by 0.4948 of a
second.
It was the third victory of the season
for the Firestone Indy Lights rookie and
gave him a 27-point advantage over Richard
Antinucci heading into the Corning Duels
(two races on the same day - July 5 - on
the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International
road course). Antinucci, who held a
one-point lead over Battistini coming into
the 115-lap race, advanced five positions
to finish ninth in the No. 7 Lucas Oil/Sam
Schmidt Motorsports car.
Ana Beatriz tied her career high with a

As the competitors transitioned to the
white flag lap of the Firestone Freedom
100, the top four cars were separated by
seven-tenths of a second and the sizable
crowd along the front stretch of the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway collectively
rose to catch the anticipated battle to
the finish. Leader Dillon Battistini was
tasked with parrying the moves of Richard
Antinucci, Wade Cunningham and Ana Beatriz
-- much as he had done throughout the
spirited race on the 2.5-mile oval.
Antinucci, looking for his second
Firestone Indy Lights victory of the
season, looked high and low for an opening
in the short chute between Turns 3 and 4
and again entering the front stretch --
the attenuator of Battistini's No. 15
Panther Racing car a few feet in front. He
couldn't get any closer.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - J.R. Hildebrand

didn't have to.
Hildebrand,
starting fourth in the No. 25 Allied

Lap 59 restart and at the line eight laps
later for his first Firestone Indy Lights
victory and the first for RLR/Andersen

second - the eighth-closest in Firestone
Indy Lights history in the series' first
race at the 1.52-mile oval since 2004.

MADISON, Ill. -- Joey
Logano makes no secret of his desire

If team owner Joe Gibbs and
president J.D. Gibbs offer Logano the
No. 20 Sprint Cup car Tony
Stewart will leave at the end of the
season, there is no question as to what
Logano's answer will be.
Eyes on Logano
Joey Logano is
one name that immediately pops to
mind when it comes to a possible
replacement for Tony Stewart
"If they offer it to me, I'd
take it," said Logano, competing in
the Nationwide Series for the first time
in a month Saturday at Gateway
International Raceway. "It's
something that has been talked about,
but I'm not in a position to say
anything. I don't really know what I'm
going to do yet. Like I said before, I'm
focused on the No. 20 Nationwide car
right now, and from there, that is Joe
and J.D.'s deal."
Not that Logano, 18, thought his
rise to NASCAR's highest level would be
so meteoric, but Stewart's decision to
leave Gibbs in favor of a partnership in
newly formed Stewart-Haas Racing opens a
window of opportunity for the racing
prodigy.
"I definitely think it's a
cool thing to even have your name in the
hat on that one," Logano said.
"It's a great team and a great car.
The car has won two championships with
Tony driving it. The whole team has been
together for so long, and to be driving
any car for Joe Gibbs Racing right now
would be great.
"I'm just trying to make the
best of my opportunities now. The only
thing I've got set in stone right now i
