Jimmy Johnson Wins Kansas Takes Points Lead

September 28, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Jimmie Johnson barely held off a strong challenge from Carl Edwards on Sunday at Kansas Speedway, winning the race and vaulting into first place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Edwards, who overcame a poor starting position and two pit lane incidents, to catch and pass Johnson for the lead, lost the top spot to Johnson on a pit stop with 47 laps to go. He finally caught him again on the last lap, shooting past Johnson on the low side of the banked 1.5-mile oval in Turn 3– but just a little too fast.

Edwards slid up the track and bounced off the wall as Johnson drove back past and on to his fifth victory of the season, with Edwards holding on for second.

Greg Biffle, who came into the third race of the 10-race Chase for the championship with two straight victories, followed the leaders across the finish line to stay close in the points.

By Brad Littlefield, NHRA.com

Qualifying concluded at the 21st annual O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals with three of Friday’s four leaders maintaining their top spots amid shuffling and last-minute heroics throughout. Brandon Bernstein (Top Fuel), Ashley Force (Funny Car), and Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) will lead their respective categories into final eliminations on Sunday, while early Pro Stock Motorcycle leader Chris Rivas was supplanted with a jaw-dropping 6.910 at 191.10 mph by Chip Ellis (pictured).

Highlights of final qualifying include a successful last-ditch effort by Funny Car title contender Tony Pedregon to make the starting field. The team concept worked to perfection for some juggernauts as drivers for Kalitta Motorsports and John Force Racing hold three of the top four qualifying spots in Top Fuel and Funny Car, respectively.
