Busch still qualifies third in fire-salvaged backup truck Crawford earns fifth pole in 295 Truck Series starts
October 31, 2008
FORT WORTH, Texas — Kyle Busch qualified third Thursday for the NASCAR race at Texas in a truck that was salvaged two nights earlier from a hauler fire that destroyed the team’s primary truck and a lot of equipment. I’ll put a car freshner in it, hang it from the mirror.
“With the black soot, you couldn’t read the number on the side of it this morning,” Busch said after his lap of 178.183 mph.
The hauler for Billy Ballew Motorsports was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night near Shreveport, La., when it was en route to Texas for Friday night’s Chevy Silverado 350K. Busch said the backup truck and a scarred pit box were the only things that were salvaged.

Track faster, Trying to get more downforce a problem with the new car

Out of the frying pan, into the fire. Such is the case this week as the Cup Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway, which crew chief Tony Gibson calls a “faster Atlanta, a faster Charlotte.”
“It has a little more grip than Atlanta, and not as much as Charlotte, and it is faster,” Gibson said of the 1.5-mile oval near Fort Worth. “It’s a little faster than Atlanta is, but it does have two bumps. It has one exiting Turn 1 into Turn 2 and it has one into Turn 3 that is a pretty good little bump. You have to address those two bumps, especially since everybody is on bump stops and it tends to upset the car and detach the tire from the track.”

Edwards faces tall task to overcome Johnson’s lead
October 30, 2008
3:07 PM EDT
Coming off last week’s victory at Atlanta and heading into this week’s race at Texas, Carl Edwards has to feel pretty good.
Edwards rose to second in the standings, and based on the last three years the odds are good he’ll have a strong performance at Texas, too. He won there in the spring for his second victory at the track.
The problem? As good as Edwards’ numbers are at Texas and the remaining three tracks, Jimmie Johnson’s statistics are even better. Add to that the tall mountain Edwards statistically faces and the task is indeed a daunting one.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports News
October 29, 2008
Sam Schmidt’s life has been defined by his passions, but he readily admits politics isn’t one of them.
For many years, Schmidt lived to race. He moved swiftly through the ranks and worked tirelessly to fulfill a childhood dream of starting in the Indy 500. When a January 2000 crash during a practice run left him a quadriplegic and on a respirator for six weeks, Schmidt’s passion shifted to fighting for survival and, after several grueling months, struggling to support his wife and two children.
