Indy Car Season to Start Without Star Driver Heilo Castroneves Lastest Update on His Tax Fraud Trial

March 28, 2009

MIAMI  — Brazilian race car driver and “Dancing With The Stars” winner Helio Castroneves owes more than $2.3 million in U.S. taxes because of unreported income and improper deductions over a five-year period, an Internal Revenue Service agent testified Friday at his tax evasion trial.
The total, IRS agent Joann Levitt said, “is everything that should have been on the tax returns but wasn’t.”

Castroneves attorney David Garvin questioned whether Levitt had considered an alternative legal explanation for entries on the tax returns from 1999 to 2004.

“You made certain assumptions but you disregarded other evidence, isn’t that right?” Garvin asked.

“I have rendered an opinion based on all of the evidence,” Levitt said. “This was reportable by Helio Castroneves because it was his income.”

The testimony by Levitt, the final prosecution witness, capped the fourth week of the trial. Castroneves, 33, his 35-year-old sister and business manager Katiucia, and Michigan lawyer Alan Miller, 71, each face more than six years in prison if convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion involving about $5.5 million in income. It will be a bittersweet weekend at Manzanita Speedway as the World of Outlaws make their final trip to the half-mile located on the corner of 35th & Broadway in Phoenix on Saturday, March 28 for a full night of racing with $10,000 on the line to the winner. Six drivers that will be in action this weekend have won at the track with the series and each looks to add their name to the records books as the final series winner at the legendary track.
Jac Haudenschild, who will be inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame this year, has shown his versatility over the years at Manzanita Speedway. He has four career wins, in three different types of race cars. He won his first race at the track in a non-wing sprint car in 1991 and followed that up the same year with a win in a midget. He won with the World of Outlaws in 1992 during the Slick 50 Winter Series, and was also victorious with the series at the half-mile in 1998. Listen Now

Danica Patrick. Contract year. They’re intertwined for the immediate future.

March 27, 2009

Patrick expects that question to pop up at every stop on the IndyCar Series’ April-October caravan just as that question of when will she win her first race did. Patrick, who answered the latter last April at Twin Ring Motegi in her 50th start, will use the unfolding season as a reply regarding her auto racing future.

Patrick, the first female to win a major closed-course auto race, enters her third season with Andretti Green Racing and fourth overall in the series next week at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“For me, in my career, I have to be in a situation where I can do well, because that’s what drives the rest of it,” says Patrick, who as of early this year is being represented by IMG. “I think all (I) care about is winning races and running up front. It’s always good to do well when you’re in a contract year, but people who are in the business are aware of what I’m capable of and they pay attention for more than just a couple of races or a half a season to see what I’m doing. I would hope more of my career would speak that just this year. Listen Now
