What’s up with the O’Reilly Southern All Stars dirt touring series?
Last week’s newsletter, sent to their Huntsville email addresses, was
returned undeliverable, and the phone number on the website has been
disconnected. Friends at Dixie’s Saturday show told us changes were
coming at OSAS.
We got the update from Kelley Carlton, who’s now the General Manager,
via phone Monday. He’s been generally running the series in recent
years.
The Series is 27 years old, and is now being run by Carlton and his
staff from his office in Woodruff, SC (near Spartanburg). Lynn Acklin,
of Huntsville, who was helping with PR, scheduling, and operations, is
taking an early retirement. Series founder B.J. Parker continues to
help with the Top Tracks crate engine series, co-owned with Dixie’s
Micky Swims. The owners of the Southern All Stars are David Miller and
Charles Roberts.
Carlton also has a personal promotion and race management firm, KELCAR
MotorSports, which provides staff and tech men for non-OSAS races on a
contract basis, including Talladega’s Ice Bowl for the past nine years.
The firm also does promotion for drivers and race teams, and his posts
on the racing forums, as Flagone, are a reliable and factual news
source. His full time job is EMS Paramedic Training.
Carlton says no big changes are coming. They will have the 2009
schedule done before the December’s PRI Show, and it will include 28-30
shows. They are hoping to add more Friday shows, giving race teams
morre Friday-Saturday combinations. Some of these Friday shows will
only pay $4000 to win, making them more affordable to promoters. Two
new tracks in GA and VA may join the schedule.
The season will open again at Golden Isles and the Super Bowl of
Racing, with at least two sanctioned shows (and maybe all four nights).
The tire rules, which caused so much controversy for the UMP
sanctioning body last winter, will be the usual OSAS rule: open hoosier
tires.
Brad York’s great all-late model show, which opened the season at
Lavonia last March, is on the schedule. It included OSAS, Fastrak, and
limited LMs.
To increase the car count, SAS will offer a performance bonus, paying
$500 extra per race to the Top Five in points if they have perfect
attendance.
Rules will remain the same, including the fan favorite double-file
restarts. Keeping the interests of the drivers, teams, fans, and
promoters balanced is one of Carlton’s jobs, and he doesn’t think
inverting part of the starting grid, after qualifying, would be wise.

One of the strengths of the series is car counts. At the recent
Talladega Short Track race, 25 started the feature, and 19 others
missed out. In 2008, five races paid $10,000 to win, two $7500 to win
shows were rained out, and 18 paid $5000 or $5400 to win. 18 different
drivers won SAS races.
The Series has run 22 shows in 2008, with two remaining:
Nov. 9 – Cherokee Speedway – Gaffney, SC – $10,000 to win – Blue-Gray
100
Nov. 15 – Cleveland Speedway – Cleveland, TN – $5000 to win – The
Gobbler
Last year, Ivedent Lloyd of Ocala , FL, won his first career O’Reilly
Southern All Star Racing Series Championship. The five-time National
Late Model Series Champion bested three time runner-up Mark Vineyard by
just twenty-six points, which was the second closest margin of victory
in OSAS history. Lloyd had seven top five and seventeen top ten
finishes. Lloyd was held winless on the season but did pick up a
Southern All Stars East Twin Twenty victory at Golden Isles Speedway as
well as a pair of Fast Time Awards. Lloyd saw many of the venues he
competed at for the very first time when he pulled through the gates.
Lloyd has already won a race in 2008, and has almost clinched the
points championship, worth $10,000, leading by 130 points with one race
remaining. Winning a race is worth 100 points.
OSAS has inducted four into their Hall of Fame:
2005 – B.J. Parker – OSAS Founder
2005 – Joe Lee Johnson – Cleveland Speedway Owner
2006 – Don Hester – Inaugural OSAS Champion
2007 – Jerry Inmon – 1984 OSAS Champion

Carlton has also been running the O’Reilly Southern All Stars East
series, which is co-owned by Ritchie Lewis and Cherokee Speedway owner
Lennie Buff. There haven’t been schedule conflicts in the past between
SAS and SAS-East.
In 2008 SAS-East had 13 races, with five paying $3000 to win, seven
paying $4000 to win, and one paying $10,000 to win. Two other $10,000
to win shows were cancelled due to rain and the gas shortage. Chris
Madden won seven of the races, and Casey Roberts, of Toccoa, repeated
as the points champion. Madden had missed the first race of the season,
but was second in points, 1118-1116. Photos from the SAS-East season

John Wes Townley, age 18, of Watkinsville, will be racing in NASCAR’s
Nationwide Series full time in 2009 with the Robby Benton team and
sponsorship from Zaxby’s Chicken Restaurants. Townley’s father is a
co-founder of Zaxby’s and CFO of Zaxby’s Franchising.
In 2008, Townley has run six Craftsman Truck races for Rousch Racing,
starting as high as second at Tallageda, but two 18th places finishes
are his best. He drove Benton’s Nationwide car at Dover (engine
failure) and Charlotte (crash).
Townley ran the ARCA schedule, finishing sixth in the last race at
Toledo, and seventh in final 2008 points. In June, he was second in a
late model show at Lanier – his best finish to date in 2008.
Benton is a former driver, with seven NASCAR Truck and Busch starts in
2002-3.

Jimmy Kay, of Taylorsville, GA, was the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly

earned him, and 149 others, an invitation to the 3rd Annual Fall
Nationals that will be held at Columbus (MS) Speedway Nov. 28-29.
The 2009 Lavonia Speedway Rules Meeting will be held at the Lavonia
Speedway on Sunday Nov,16th @ 2pm. The 2008 Points Awards will be given
out at this meeting.
Wesley English & Crew got the Latemodel win at the Hartwell Speedway
Sat., following a win at Travelers Rest Speedway last week.
The dirt racing calendar:
11-2/3 The National 100 $30K @ EAMS
10-28/11-01the Outlaw World Finals in Charlotte 4 day show now 5 $10K
races
11-01 Clarksville Speedway $3k
11-8 Pike County $3K
11-8 Duck River $3K
11-9 Cherokee $10k
With the passing of legendaries Marshall Mann, Skip Carey and Al
Ciraldo, and the retirements of Pete Van Wieren and Larry Munson, Dixie
Speedway announcer Johnny Clark has probably become the senior sports
announcer in Georgia.
He’s still backed up, occasionally, by Jimmy Mosteller, who turned 82
Sunday.
Dixie’s Bill Elliott 50 lapper, $5000 to win:
SLM Feature:
#25 Shane Clanton
#M1 Dale McDowell
#44 Chris Madden
#44 Clint Smith
#53 Ray Cook
#201 Billy Ogle Jr
#F9 Frank Ingram
#00 Johnny Chastain
#77 Tim Day
#26 Tony Knowles
#3 Luther Jenkins
NASCAR 25 lapper:
1 – Schrader (driving a Clint Smith GRT)
2 – Stewart (driving track champ Ricky Williams’ car)
3 – Blaney (driving Dale McDowell car)
4 – Gilleland (?)
5 – Kahne (driving an Elliott car)
6 – Elliott
7 – Everham
This was just a novelty race, enjoyed by many (who left afterwards).
After ten laps, they inverted the field, putting Schrader on the pole
(after he had a mysterious car failure, sending him to the rear), just
prior to the inversion.
Children’s Health Care of Atlanta hopefully gets a lot of money. They
sold out 300 autograph party tickets at $30 each.
Sunday on the NASCAR show, Elliott said “we’re not going to let Kenny
play with us any more.”
The race appears to have been a “curse” for the participants. At
Atlanta’s NASCAR show Sunday, the racers did poorly. Stewart was 17th,
Gilliland 27th, Kahne 33rd, Schrader 35th, Elliott 38th, and Blaney
41st.
Pics from Bill Elliot 50 @ Dixie Speedway now posted @

Dixie is still one of the great dirt tracks, and some visitors posted
comments on http://www.trackforums.com
“Man my first time ever making it out to Dixie Speedway and I would
just like to say thank you for such a good show. I packed up the truck
and left about 4:30 from Greenville, but it was worth it. Your track
looked wonderful from my perspective. Pretty good weather, just a
little cold. This facility is a beautiful facility. I would like to say
thank you to everyone that made this one possible and I hope to make it
back again next season.”
“We agree. We made the drive from Spartanburg and enjoyed every minute
of it. We will definitely make this trip next year!”
“i hope to get down there next year for a big race or regular show”

Dirt late model racer Dale McDowell, of Chickamanga, and Herman, Rusty
& Sanford Goddard, owners of Knoxville, TN, based Goddard Performance
Parts, the Manufacturers of Warrior late model chassis, have committed
to a joint venture to develop and manufacture the latest in late model
technology chassis and components.
Dale’s role will include two distinct facets. First, he will be
driving the Warrior house car creating hands on test opportunities for
the development of new design chassis and components.
Second, Dale will team with Goddard Performance Parts to provide
personal design and technical expertise toward continual development of
a new McDowell-Warrior chasis. This chassis will be available for sale
for the 2009 race season. Participation in this program will access the
customer to select race track test sessions with personal attention
provided by Dale and the rest of the Warrior technical crew.

No track in GA communicates more or better with their race teams and
fans than The Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele. Owner Marvin
Ragan, announcer Billy Bob, and track manager Eddie McDonald use the
website’s Forum to make announcers, answer questions, and keep the
people informed.
As the season ends, Ragan has posted this:
“Many Thanks to everyone for your support of W.C.S. this year. This
has been a tough year for many people and I know many of you supported
the track when it would have been much easier to just stay at home and
wait for the economy to get better.
“Hopefully when the 2009 racing season comes around, our country will
have rebounded from its problems and everything will be back to normal
or at least headed in the right direction.
“I also want to give a special “Thanks” to all the track workers this
year. They did a great job and many times we, including myself, fail to
give them credit for their dedication and hard work for such little
pay. Everyone was at the top of their game Saturday night and it really
showed with the season ending with some great racing in record time.
“We will schedule our annual awards banquet within the next few days
and notify everyone of the date. Hopefully we can have a good turnout
and close out the year on a high note.”

posted at www.georgiastockcarracing.com
It’s long, but loaded with great info.
Clint King took his Pro Challenge Chevrolet to victory lane in the
twin 25-lap, non-points events at Orlando Friday night, then swept
Saturday’s qualifying and the 50-lap race. King led every circuit from
green-to-checker for the 13-year-old’s ninth victory of the year. It
also lengthened his point lead with only one race remaining on the
schedule. Kyle Plott, of Marietta, was second in the Orlando SpeedWorld
race.
The fourth and final round of the 2008 Pro Challenge Playoff, November
9th at Peach State Speedway in Georgia, will determine the series’
National Champion and the Rookie of the Year. King leads Wilson by 132
heading to Peach State. Wilson is 83 tallies ahead of his closest ROY
contender, Trevor Edwards, who sits third in National Points.

Justin South chose a dramatic way to pick up his first win of the
season at Birmingham International Raceway on Sunday — complete with a
crash across the finish line that brought crew members, fans, and
police onto the track.
South, who drove in the ARCA Series last year, battled Hueytown car
dealer Ken McFarland for the last 20 laps of the 200-lap World Classic
late model race. The two cars were door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper as
McFarland tried to pass South on the inside.
On the final lap South got squeezed into the concrete wall in the
backstretch with McFarland underneath him, lifting the right side of
South’s Petty blue No. 43 off the track.
South stayed on the throttle, caught McFarland coming out of the final
turn and tagged him from behind, sending both cars in a spinning wreck
across the finish line.
BIR officials had to resort to a video replay from the Bright House TV
crew filming the race to determine that McFarland actually pushed South
sideways across the finish line.
A wild scene then erupted around the two wrecked cars in front of the
grandstand as crew members and fans converged and exchanged some angry
words and police officers came out to keep things from getting out of
hand.
“I was centimeters off the the wall,” South said of the incident on
the backstretch. “I knew I was tore up so i just didn’t let off” on the
throttle. “I led so many laps I wasn’t about to let it get away from me
in the last corner,” he said.
McFarland, who won the season championship after dominating most of
the races this year, said he didn’t know if he put South into the wall
but that he “didn’t intentionally do anything.”
McFarland said he wasn’t sure whether he’ll race next year. “I’m 45
years old,” he said. “I have to go home all winter and think about what
I’m going to do.”
Seventeen late models started the season-ending race at BIR. By the
end only a few finished in one piece.
The open-wheel modified race was won by Dustin Knowles, of Trussvile,
a student at Jacksonville State University who also won the season
championship. Knowles dominated the race. Gary Nix finished second.

Promotion ideas: Trackchaser Ed Esser reports from Thunderbird
Speedway in Crandall, TX. This track uses the yellow/green in the
races where the race goes on but the yellow light is turned on with
the green to indicate a single car spin or slowing and then turned out
when he clears the track or gets back up to speed.
Esser also sent this good idea from the Cajun Indoor Kart Nationals in
Gonzales LA: All the features were 20 laps or 20 minutes.
Promotion ideas: Just added for Friday night will be a Glow in the
Dark Motorcycle Jump by Robbie Knievel, along with some other Halloween
entertainment. Pits open on Saturday, November 1st at 8:30am, there
will be an on track autograph session beginning at 11:30am, the Adam
Petty Memorial All American 400 event will begin at 1pm with the 200
lap ASA Southeast event, which will be followed by the 200 lap CRA
Super Series event. More information on the event is available at
www.musiccitymotoplex.com.
On Friday the CRA web site will have updates of all the practice
times and qualifying results as well as the Last Chance race results to
complete the line-up for the 200 lap CRA event with the All American
400. On Saturday the web site will have the results of the 200 lap CRA
All American 400 event. Visit the CRA web site at www.craracing.net to

Promotion ideas: Andy Granatelli and his Hurricane Racing Association
ran regular weekly events at Soldier Field (Chicago, IL) up into the
60s, and that’s where the infamous fake accident story comes in. It’s
well chronicled in Andy’s book, “They Call Me Mr. 500,” which I read
many years ago but I don’t have it on hand anymore. We’re working from
memory here.
This was a promotional stunt which, I think, doubled the size of their
crowd for the next week. It was all staged, of course, part of Andy’s
outside the box thinking. He even paid an extra $50 if a driver rolled
one over.
On this particular night, the alleged accident occurred right in front
of the crowd (obviously, the late Bob Harmon also learned from Andy
Granatelli). The ambulance rolls onto the track, the driver is
extricated from the vehicle, placed on a gurney, and then put in the
ambulance, presumably for transport to the nearest hospital. However,
the attendant doesn’t secure the rear doors to the ambulance, and when
it pulls away from the scene, the gurney rolls out and starts rolling
down the track by itself.
Meanwhile, the field has been given the green flag in anticipation of
the ambulance being off the track by the next lap, and they come
roaring out of the turn to see this gurney rolling down the
straightaway in front of them. Cars swerve to the left and right,
barely missing the gurney. My memory is a little hazy from that
point—either the ambulance crew retrieved it, or somebody ran over it.
The drivers were in on the caper, of course, and by the time the
gurney rolled out of the ambulance, there was a mannequin on it instead
of the driver. I’m not sure how many heart attacks there were in the
crowd before they managed to explain what had really happened, but I am
sure that no promoter since Andy Granatelli has had the cojones to try
that since then. (reported by John Potts in The Frontstretch -

Promotion ideas: Our first ever Greenville Pickens Speedway
‘promotion’ book (we called it a memory book last year) was a big hit
and helped many drivers in their sponsorship search in ‘08. A brand new
2009 version is coming your way and will be available for drivers/teams
sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It will include some
powerful images of GPS by Roger Moore, the Greenville News’ Richard
Shiro, and our own FAN CAM photographers. Sponsors will get the feel of
GP coming off our biggest season ever in 2008…something is working
well at GP as fans are opting for the best in upstate affordable family
entertainment close to home….and they need to be a PART OF IT!!
The cost this year is $30 per book, and we’re taking orders in the GPS
front office. The hard bound volume contains the best pictures of the
year and lays out for your potential sponsors the excitement that is
GPS and the reason they need to be involved here in 2009. It also
outlines the GPS PARTNERSHIP DEAL which gives drivers who bring on
sponsors added value and benefit by engaging those newly involved
sponsors in our GPS marketing mix..including billboards, radio, program
and PA time. This cutting edge program was outlined in SPEEDWAY
ILLUSTRATED as GP is one of the first if not the first track in the
nation to offer this program to its drivers and race teams.
This is a powerful presentation and if you’re serious about
sponsorship…then this is the way to go.

COCHRAN SPEEDWAY CROWNS 2008 POINTS CHAMPS IN SEASON FINALE
By: Pastor Todd Shearin
Saturday marked the end to the regular season of racing at Cochran
Speedway, with the exception of the annual Allen Sparks Memorial race
Thanksgiving weekend.
In the late model division Dennis McDaniel raced to his second
consecutive championship.McDaniel and the DMD racing team were
consistent throughout the year and with a 3rd place finish in the
finale. Polesitter Stevie Jones bested a 12 car field by leading every
lap.
Ricky Burgamy took the sportsman crown in dominating fashion by
winning the final race. Burgamy took the Fatbaby Racing entry to
victory by starting on pole and walking away from the field.Eric
Baggett was able to challenge momentarily on several restarts but
Burgamy was just too strong.
In perhaps the closest battle, the pure stock title was on the line
with a mere 6 point separation between leader Scooter Smith and Eric
Register. Everything seemed to fall into place for Smith as he would
win the race and nail down the title. Register had a great night
finishing 3rd behind Channon Crabb but came up just a little short on
points in the end.
In cadet action, Darryl Dunn took the race win by leading every lap
but it was Dustin Miller taking the points title for the second year in
a row.Miller and Kyle Conyer have battled all year but Miller was able
to win the crown with a strong 2nd place finish ahead of late model
regular Mitch Fulford. Miller who is a college student at Georgia
Southern Univ., and a very nice young man raced hard logging several
wins in the regular season.
James Blount took the road warrior win.The championship went to James
Tucker who has been a hard racer all year.Tucker has won several times
in what has to be one of the most difficult of all cases to win in. A
very sweet young lady, Renee Dixon, was in the hunt for the title all
year.
I also want to let all of you know that Mrs.Frankie Young suffered a
heart attack in the stands Sat.night. She is a member of my church and
I along with her family were with her Sat.night-Sun.morning at the
hospital. It looks as if she will recover but keep her in your prayers.
