“The thrill of victory and the agony of concrete”

Georgia may not have been a “Battleground” state in the McCain vs
Obama war, but it certainly is in the ‘09 Asphalt War.
The war probably started in late 2007, when Hooters sold Peach State
Speedway to Floridian Paul Kegel. Peach State promoter Micky Cain
left, and joined with John Kee, of Athens, and Stan Narrison, former
Lanier GM, to start the Southeast Asphalt Tour. They affiliated with
John Huth’s Florida-based ASA, which is in a costly court battle with
Ron and Sandy Varney’s midwest-based ASA over the ASA (American Speed
Assn.) name.

Kegel leased Peach State to former racer Vince Whitmire, of Commerce,
and Whitmire operated the track through 2008, and directed the Georgia
Asphalt Series (GAS), which had a 12-race schedule, including five
shows, plus the World Crown 200, at Peach State. Two GAS races were
out-of-state, at Anderson, SC.
Round two (or maybe three or four) started when GA Stock Car Racing
broke the story Oct. 14 that the racing and insurance Gresham family,
of Stockbridge and Griffin, were trying to buy Peach State Speedway.
Another shot was fired Oct. 29, when Whitmire paid $25 to Jackson
County Superior Court to register the Trade Name “The Georgia Asphalt
Series.” That shot may have missed, since the sale of GAS was completed
and filed Oct. 20.
Kegel was at Peach State Sunday for the World Crown show, and met
potential buyer Tony Gresham for the first time Monday.
The Greshams want to buy the track, and maybe the adjacent kart track
too. They want a track, not a racing series like GAS.
All references to the GAS series disappeared from the Peach State
website this week, and linnks now go to the Lanier Speedway webpage,
which announces that the GAS will now be headquartered at Lanier, and
“daily operation of the series will be handled by Lanier National
Speedway General Manager Terry Roberts.”
Roberts has been at Lanier for only a few months, but was
well-respected as the long-time operator of the New Smyrna Speedway
near Daytona, FL. Lanier has great facilities for a short track, and
the backstretch terraces are unique. Previous mis-management has made
car counts a problem.
Another shot was fired Thursday, as Whitmire sends out a news release:
“The new Southern Pro Late Model Touring Series will hit asphalt tracks
throughout the Southeast in 2009. Former Georgia Asphalt Series
Promoter Vince Whitmire, is currently putting together a schedule and
will be released soon.” The series website www.splmseries.com is
currently being developed.
There are only five asphalt short tracks in Georgia. Only two of them
have weekly schedules – Lanier and Watermelon Capital. Peach State,
South Georgia, and Senoia in recent years have had special shows only,
sometimes with lease arrangements with traveling series. A quarter-mile
infield track at Atlanta Motor Speedway is used only for Legends-type
cars.
Competing for spots on the schedule at these five tracks in 2009 will
be four touring series, emphasing the GM crate engine:
ASA South
ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour
GA Asphalt Series
Southern Pro Late Model Touring Series
ASA South is first with their 2009 Schedule (GA races only):
March 28th South Georgia Motorsports Park Cecil, GA
April 4th New Senoia Speedway Senoia, GA
April 11th TBA Georgia
May 9th Watermelon Capitol Speedway Cordele, GA
May 30th New Senoia Speedway Senoia, GA
Their affiliated ASA Challenge Late Model Series has two nearby shows:
August 1st Bristol Motor Speedway Bristol, TN
August 15th TBA Nashville, TN
Another part of the 2009 asphalt season will be two Super Late Model
Series:
PASS South raced their big-motored cars at Watermelon last April, and
at Greenville-Pickens in Oct.
CRA, the Champion Racing Assn. from the midwest, is racing at South
Georgia Nov. 22-23, with $10,000 to win, and will be back early in
2009. If these shows are successful, in attendance and car counts, they
may be back. They race the big motor cars at tracks as small as
Anderson’s (IN) quarter-mile. http://craracing.net
Vince Whitmire has been one of the leaders in asphalt racing in the
area, seeking to standardize the motor rules among the series and the
tracks. Asphalt racing would be so much better if all of the rules
were identical – like much of dirt track racing. Hopefully his efforts
will continue and be successful.
John Kee has put the ASA Southeast Tour on cable TV weekly – hopefully
that will continue. They had four of 14 races in GA – including a great
show at Lanier.
The asphalt scene in Georgia seems to be in turmoil – with battles in
the war going on everywhere. Racers, and fans, will have lots of
choices.
As fans, we’ll watch it on the track and in the grandstands.

Dwight Pilgram, of the GA Mini-Sprints, reports that the series will
be visiting some new dirt tracks in 2009, and a few new drivers are
expected. One attraction, he says, is the low cost of racing. He
recently purchased a new motor for $600.

Race #1 of the Georgia Legends Winter Series and Atlanta Motor
Speedways Winter Flurry Series is Friday night – November 14th.
The Georgia Winter Series is a trophy only series made up of 3 races
at Lanier, six Winter Flurry Series races at Atlanta Motor Speedway,
and three races at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele. Atlanta
Motor Speedway’s Winter Flurry is a series of three races on the
quarter-mile and three on the Road Course. Champions of both series
will wim a spot on the stage at next March’s NASCAR event.

When Robert Brooks, founder of the Hooters restaurant chain and the
Hooters Pro Cup Series, passed away in 2006, question marks surrounded
the ultimate fate of the series.
The Brooks estate and Hooters restaurants announced they were pulling
their sponsorship of the series at the end of the 2008 season, meaning
the Rockingham race may be the final event ever for what was arguably
the strongest and most successful short track touring series of this
era.
“I don’t really have any earth-shattering news for you, but we’re not
throwing in the towel by any means,” said Series Director Tony Cox, and
a search for a new title sponsor is underway. “We’re working hard and
hopefully we’ll keep things moving forward. I can tell you that
probably within three weeks … we will be letting everyone know the
future as far as our progress moving forward. We will not keep you
hanging in the balance … hopefully something will get solidified so
we can continue in ’09.”
Estimates put the sponsorship at $2 million per season. Participants
at Peach State for the World Crown reported that the Series had already
lost it’s office space, provided by Hooters.

John Wes Townley, of Watkinsville, finished 37th in the World
Crown 200, after getting swept up in a three-car wreck in front of him
and retired early due to a punctured radiator. Townley is scheduled to
test at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL, Nov. 22, to prepare for
the 2008 Snowball Derby.
Next he heads to Covington, KY, for the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series
Championship Awards Banquet Dec. 6. The team finished 7th in overall
driver and owners points.
“It is so frustrating to finish the weekend like we did,” stated
Townley. “I know I have had a lot of bad luck the past few weekends (in
NASCAR Truck and Nationwide Series action) but I know it’s not the
mistakes you make, but how you recover from them. We will re-group and
focus on Homestead for next week.”

Ryan Crane dominated the US Auto Sales 100 for Super Late Models at
Peach State. Crane led the entire race and lapped all but the top four
cars on his way to victory. Justin Wakefield crossed the line in
second, but was disqualified in post race tech for too much left side
weight. Crane now lives in Florida, but graduated ffrom Jefferson (GA)
High School.
Allan Karnes drove his pro late model in the Super LM race. Local
favorite Jason Hogan was never competitive, dropping out when he was
lapped.
Top five (of 11): 1) Crane 2) Joey Senter 3) Dwayne Buggay 4) Jeremy
Rice 5) Alan Karnes

With nine wins already on the season, Clint King appeared to be a lock
for the Pro Challenge Series title at Peach State Speedway in Georgia
on Saturday night.  King qualified seventh, forcing him to race hard
for the championship, and his day appeared to be a little tougher than
he has ever imagined when he had to go to the rear mid-race after
contact with another car. He recovered, to win the race and the
championship.
Rookie Kyle Plott, of Marietta, was sixth in PC National Points.

Ricky Brooks, tech man at Five Flags and Mobile, was the technical
director for the World Crown 300 Pro Late Model and Super Late Model
races at Peachstate Speedway. He also took a look at the other
divisions, and every car or truck in the Sportsman and Super Truck
races was DQ’d. No purse was paid at all, even to Ruben Tarca, who has
the Argentine flag on his truck.
The top two in open wheel modifieds were DQ’d too.

Larry Boutwell, of Baker, FL drove his McLeod Construction Rocket to
his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win, and the
$3,000 top prize, Saturday night at Avenger Motor Speedway (Greenville,
AL).
Derrick Rainey, of Powder Springs, took the third spot in the Hays
Family Racing/Barto Enterprises Warrior, and Hunter Peacock, of Macon,
finished fourth in the Nasworthy Mechanical Bullet.
Series National point leader Chip Brindle, of Chatsworth, had a rough
night, as he spun in turn four on lap 20. Brindle was able to continue,
but finished 15th in the CSC Trailer Repair/Brindle Brothers Auto Parts
Mastersbilt. Heading into the final points race of the season on
November 29 at Columbus (MS) Speedway, Brindle has a 66-point lead over
Boutwell. All Brindle has to do is start the main event at Columbus
Speedway to clinch the 2008 NeSmith Series National Championship and
the $20,000 top prize.

Southern Raceway, Milton, FL, has ended the 2008 racing season,
cancelling the few remaining events at the speedway including the 6th
Annual Southern 100 Crate Late Model race which advertised $10,000 to
win. The speedway will be open for the 2009 season and Track Owner
Billy Hoover says that new information will be posted on the tracks

Dwight Pilgram, of the GA Mini-Sprints, reports that the series will
be visiting some new dirt tracks in 2009, and a few new drivers are
expected. One attraction, he says, is the low cost of racing. He
recently purchased a new motor for $600.

Barack Obama is now a Junior Member of www.4m.net, and has revealed a
few of his plans:
“After careful review with my staff, all time trials will be banned in
all forms of racing. Standard pill draw will determine starting spot
for qualifying races. Also it will become mandatory for sprint cars to
have starters. Thanks Barack.”
