“An empty seat is a tragedy” – Humpy Wheeler
To our readers: This newsletter was started three years ago to help
fans know more about upcoming shows at area tracks, and to help tracks
attract more paying fans.
Each issue has included “Promotion ideas” for track operators.
This issue reprints a bunch of those ideas.
Most readers, of course, don’t promote tracks, but we encourage you -
if you see a good idea – to copy it and email it to your favorite track
promoter. Copy and email the whole issue if you want.
Some of these ideas are silly, some are useless, and some are three
years old, but there’s a few in here that can help any promoter have a
better show and put more butts in the seats.
This week’s track schedule is at the end.

Promotion idea: FASTRAK will once again be offering $5 OFF coupons at
local Gaffney, SC merchant locations. “In these tough economic times,
we have tried to keep the racing families and fans in mind,” stated
FASTRAK Founder Stan Lester. It’s tough to make ends meet, so we’ve
teamed up with Cherokee Speedway to offer a special discount to race
fans looking to save a little and enjoy a great night of racing
entertainment.” www.Cherokee-Speedway.com www.FasTrakRacing.com
Anticipation is building for the 2nd Annual Barberville Wiener
Nationals when Volusia Speedway presents the Dog Days of Summer Night
on Saturday, August 1. Fans will be treated to free Nathan’s hot dogs
(while supplies last). Wiener dogs (dachshunds) will take to the track
for special racing excitement during intermission. A large showing of
the low-to-the-ground canines is expected for this event. The 2008
winner, Cena, owned by Jaime Herceg, will face a very strong field of
short-legged competitors to take home first-place honors again. The
dogs will race a 50 foot course. Each dog will have a “pet crew”
member assisting at the starting line and another coaxing them to the
finish line. Plenty of treats will be available for all participants
and trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers.

led before the break, changed four tires, and restarted fifth. He got
the lead back on lap 190, and was never passed. www.craracing.net

Promotion idea: Mansfield Motorsports Park hired all of the city’s
laid off police officers to work at the track for the weekend ARCA
event. They hope to be able to do the same thing for future track
events this year until those officers are hired back, proving that a
racetrack can be a good neighbor after all. (From Speed51.com)
Promotion idea from Trackchaser Guy Smith (Lifetime Track
Total-1,213): Corson’s Speedway in NJ…Since this track is on private
property, you don’t hear too much about it…They charge no admission,
entry fee, or payout any purse, which keeps them a non-business so the
state doesn’t regulate them…The coolest thing is the food, served at
intermission. As they want to keep it non-business, all food is free
but there is a donation box…You take what you want, give what you
want, and they use the money collected to buy the food for the
following week…If people eat a lot and give a lot, the food the next
week will be great…If they don’t collect much, then the food is just
hot dogs or something… This week the food was great, with pulled pork
sandwiches, french fries, cheese sticks, baked beans, cole slaw,
brownies, and drinks.
Promotion idea: “We had a meeting last Saturday with all the crew and
decided that this may help save our racers and fans from heat

and our drivers from heat exhaustion.”

Promotion idea: The American Speed Association Member Tracks program
is offering short tracks a chance to add DriveTech to their operations.
DriveTech brings NASCAR-style cars, and offers racers and fans a chance
to drive at high speeds. www.DriveTech.com
Promotion idea: The newest menu option is a 4,800-calorie mouthful at
West Michigan Whitecaps Fifth Third Ballpark concession stands
The team’s Fifth Third Burger recently garnered attention from ESPN’s
“SportsCenter” and NBC’s “The Today Show,” in addition to Web sites and
blogs across the country.
“We always try to come up with something new and innovative,”
Whitecaps president Scott Lane said. “We believe it’s very important to
the overall experience.”
Here’s what fans can expect from the Fifth Third Burger:
Start with an 8-inch sesame seed bun that requires 1 pound of dough.
Spoon on nearly a cup of chili and place five one-third pound hamburger
patties on top of that. (Get it, 5/3 pounds of beef for the Fifth Third
Burger?)
Add five slices of American cheese and liberal doses of salsa, nacho
cheese, and Fritos. Top it off with lettuce, tomato and sour cream, and
you have a burger that can be sliced with a pizza cutter and feed four
people for $20. Jalapenos are optional.
If a single person can consume the entire 4-pound finished product in
one sitting, the team plans to give him or her a special T-shirt.

Promotion idea: The BullRing at Las Vegas sells $10 tickets for Sat.
shows for half-price, before 5:00 p.m. Friday. Hotdogs and Budweiser:
both $1.
Promotion idea: Michigan’s economy is in the tank. I believe they
(indoor Arena Racing at the Deltaplex) started their season charging 15
dollars per adult. The admission price is now down to just $9.50 which
seems like a bargain to me. www.ranlayracing.com
Promotion ideas: from Chris Powell, President, Las Vegas Motor
Speedway: “We’ve lowered our concessions prices on all beverages and
soft drinks, and for those arriving early, have a $2 breakfast combo
consisting of a breakfast sandwich and coffee.
“We also want to know when you see something we need to improve on.
Please call our Fan Assistance Hotline at 702-632-8006 or text to
37686. If you still need assistance after contacting fan assistance,
then email me directly at generalmanager@lvms.com. I’ll be carrying a
Blackberry with me all weekend and will make sure someone responds to
your needs in a timely manner.”
Promotion ideas: O’Reilly Raceway Park will expand the popular Text
Trax, text messaging service in 2009 following its successful launch
last year. The facility will also continue to use services such as
Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, and Twitter to communicate with the patrons
of O’Reilly Raceway Park.
Promotion idea, from Trackchaser Randy Lewis at The Kuna (pronounced
“Q-na”) International Raceway (located inside the K Bar Arena Horse
Center in Idaho), a short (1/8 to 1/10) mile flat dirt oval where cars
are forced to pit outdoors in the parking lot.
“The second most redeeming factor was the menu offered by the Upstairs
Bar & Grill. They not only had real food, they had gourmet food. They
didn’t have that stinking stuff that most racetracks limit themselves
too such as hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos. The Upstairs Bar & Grill
offered these items on their menu:
** Cowgirl Burrito (diced seasoned chicken, cheddar cheese, tomato,
lettuce, ranch dressing in a warm burrito).
** Chicken and Joe’s (chicken bites and seasoned Joe’s)
** Tri-tip plate (sliced Tri-tip, beans and tortilla)
** Bowl O’ Meat (when all you want is that dang good meat!)
“The “Bowl O’ Meat” was several chunks of Tri-tip steak. It was
probably about eight ounces worth served in a plain Styrofoam bowl. It
seemed to have been marinated in some type of very tasty seasoning.
This stuff was absolutely deeeeelicious and priced at just $5.50. It
is outstanding for a racetrack concession as well as for a gourmet
restaurant. Amazing!”
“At Lanier Speedway on Saturday Night” by Jonathan Jackson, the
track’s theme song, is now available as a Ringtone for 99 cents at

Promotion ideas: With infield trailer heights limited to 9 feet, 6
inches, there are no bad seats in the grandstands at Volusia (FL)
Speedway Park.
To raise funds for the familes of victims of Alabama’s worst-ever
serial murder, fans who donate to the effort will have a chance to win
rides in two-seater late model racers, and be on the track for the
start of the shows Friday and Sat. nights at Deep South Speedway. The
promotion will be a part of one of the biggest stock car programs ever
held along the coastal region of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

Promotion ideas: The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to
The Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for 100 laps at the fourth
annual Circle K Colossal on March 27 and 28 with a Driver Autograph
Party and Two-Day Kid Tickets are ONLY $10!
Promotion ideas: The Second Annual Swap Meet is fast approaching at
Mobile International Speedway, with the pit gate set to open at 9 am
Saturday morning (2/21/09) and the swap meet to last until 4 pm. At
this writing the weather looks good for the event with a slight chance
of showers (20 percent) which means there is a big chance (80 percent)
there will be no rain showers! High temperature prediction is 63
degrees. Admission is $5.00 per person and all money raised will be
donated to the Mobile Rape Crisis Center. Youngsters 10 years of age
and under are admitted free to the day long event. (A follow-up says
the events has raised $2000 for the MRCC.)
Promotion ideas: The smell of methanol will have to wait for nearly
another month to kick off Ohio’s 2009 dirt track racing season, but
that won’t stop the local racing community from getting together on
Saturday, February 21st for the Inaugural Racer’s Chili Challenge
presented by BK Sears Motorsports, Hoserville Ohio , & the
Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.). Melt away your cabin fever with
a hearty bowl of chili and get ready for the 2009 racing season in
Northern Ohio with some bench racing with friends and drivers. Proceeds
from this event will be divided between the Hoserville Ohio Injured
Driver’s Benevolent Fund, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Racer’s Racing for A
Cure, & the 2009 F.A.S.T. Points Fund.
Promotion ideas: (Lanier) In an effort to improve the view for the
fans, all haulers will be removed after qualifying and will not
re-enter the track until after tomorrow’s events.
Promotion ideas: A friend … wonders if there were more pit pass
wearers than spectators … A growing fan preference for “back gate”
admission, rather than “front gate” entry, is tough on raceway owners
as back gate fees traditionally go to the sanctioning body whereas the
track owner-promoter gets the front gate ticket-sale money. “Back gate
tracks” often run many classes of cars — bolstering pit attendance —
which leads to race meets taking longer and finishing later and later.
It is a growing problem many raceways now face.
http://www.nationalspeedsportnews.com/columns/chris-economaki/back-
gate-business-booms
Promotion ideas, from trackchaser Randy (trained in ethics, not tact)
Lewis: “We like going to the movies, as well as basketball and football
games. Those events last about 2-3 hours. I normally don’t enjoy
staying at races much past three hours. The entertainment value
diminishes rapidly at that point for me. It is sometimes called the
“sore butt” syndrome.”
Promotion ideas: At New Smyrna Speedway’s Manheim Auto Auctions Super
Stock 50, only pills numbers 17, 19, and 21 were put in for the
inversion which basically inverted the whole field where the faster
cars started in the rear and the slower cars started up front making
the race even more interesting and fun.
Promotion ideas: Rusty Marcus, General Manager of Orlando SpeedWorld;
Butch Pierce, Race Coordinator; and Robert Hart, owner of both tracks,
added an extra $100.00 if Bobby Holley and Bobby Riley would start from
the rear of the 26 car field. Holley, who is the New Smyrna 2008 Super
Stock Champion, and Riley, who is the Orlando SpeedWorld 2008 Champion,
both agreed and went to the rear for the start. However, it was not
their night and neither took home the $100 bonus.
NSSN columnist Keith Waltz: “Every short track should have an 11 p.m.
curfew. If a racing program takes longer than three hours to complete,
the promoter is doing a disservice to his customers.”

Promotion ideas: Trackchasrer Allan Brown reports that the Grand
Rapids (MI) Arena Racing at the Delta-Plex is advertising “More Crashes
Than The Stock Market, and Less Than $10.00″ plus $1.00 beer, pop, and
hot dogs from 6-8pm.
Promotion ideas: Trackchaser Ed Esser reports from Thunderbird
Speedway in Crandall, TX. This track uses the yellow/green in the races
where the race goes on but the yellow light is turned on with the green
to indicate a single car spin or slowing and then turned out when he
clears the track or gets back up to speed.
Esser also sent this good idea from the Cajun Indoor Kart Nationals
in Gonzales LA: All the features were 20 laps or 20 minutes.
Promotion ideas: Just added for Friday night will be a Glow in the
Dark Motorcycle Jump by Robbie Knievel, along with some other Halloween
entertainment. www.musiccitymotoplex.com.
Promotion ideas: Andy Granatelli and his Hurricane Racing Association
ran regular weekly events at Soldier Field (Chicago, IL) up into the
60s, and that’s where the infamous fake accident story comes in. It’s
well chronicled in Andy’s book, “They Call Me Mr. 500,” which I read
many years ago but I don’t have it on hand anymore. We’re working from
memory here.
This was a promotional stunt which, I think, doubled the size of their
crowd for the next week. It was all staged, of course, part of Andy’s
outside the box thinking. He even paid an extra $50 if a driver rolled
one over.
On this particular night, the alleged accident occurred right in front
of the crowd (obviously, the late Bob Harmon also learned from Andy
Granatelli). The ambulance rolls onto the track, the driver is
extricated from the vehicle, placed on a gurney, and then put in the
ambulance, presumably for transport to the nearest hospital. However,
the attendant doesn’t secure the rear doors to the ambulance, and when
it pulls away from the scene, the gurney rolls out and starts rolling
down the track by itself.
Meanwhile, the field has been given the green flag in anticipation of
the ambulance being off the track by the next lap, and they come
roaring out of the turn to see this gurney rolling down the
straightaway in front of them. Cars swerve to the left and right,
barely missing the gurney. My memory is a little hazy from that
point—either the ambulance crew retrieved it, or somebody ran over it.
The drivers were in on the caper, of course, and by the time the
gurney rolled out of the ambulance, there was a mannequin on it instead
of the driver. I’m not sure how many heart attacks there were in the
crowd before they managed to explain what had really happened, but I am
sure that no promoter since Andy Granatelli has had the cojones to try
that since then. (reported by John Potts in The Frontstretch -

Promotion ideas: Our first ever Greenville Pickens Speedway
‘promotion’ book (we called it a memory book last year) was a big hit
and helped many drivers in their sponsorship search in ‘08. A brand new
2009 version is coming your way and will be available for drivers/teams
sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It will include some
powerful images of GPS by Roger Moore, the Greenville News’ Richard
Shiro, and our own FAN CAM photographers. Sponsors will get the feel of
GP coming off our biggest season ever in 2008…something is working
well at GP as fans are opting for the best in upstate affordable family
entertainment close to home….and they need to be a PART OF IT!!
The cost this year is $30 per book, and we’re taking orders in the GPS
front office. The hard bound volume contains the best pictures of the
year and lays out for your potential sponsors the excitement that is
GPS and the reason they need to be involved here in 2009. It also
outlines the GPS PARTNERSHIP DEAL which gives drivers who bring on
sponsors added value and benefit by engaging those newly involved
sponsors in our GPS marketing mix..including billboards, radio, program
and PA time. This cutting edge program was outlined in SPEEDWAY
ILLUSTRATED as GP is one of the first if not the first track in the
nation to offer this program to its drivers and race teams.
This is a powerful presentation and if you’re serious about
sponsorship…then this is the way to go.
Promotion ideas: South Alabama Speedway is using a “Progressive
Payoff” for their big asphalt shows. At last week’s Alabama 200 for
pro late models, winning paid $3000 if 20 cars entered, and $3500 for
25 cars. Last place paid $250 for 20 cars, $275 for 25 cars. They had
20 entries. Admission was $10.
Promotion ideas: Shanky Smith, Street Stock Champion at South Alabama
in 2005, is having a “Design a Paint Scheme Contest” and will use the
winning design on his pro late model car during the 2009 season. He’ll
be in his #17 at the Snowflake at Five Flags Dec. 12.

PROMOTION IDEAS: when Thunder Road (VT) has a trophy girl for its
prestigious Milk Bowl, they do it right. Sure she’s overweight, hairy
and doesn’t smell too nice, but a pit area full of guys at Thunder Road
all wanted their chances with her after the race. Only one problem –
she’s Patrick Laperle’s girl. The trophy queen, a Vermont dairy cow,
met Laperle in victory lane after the driver’s third win in the fall
classic at T-Road. http://www.speed51.com
PROMOTION IDEAS: At Cleveland, the Limited/Crate Late Models will
qualify one lap and then run heat races. The inversion in the heats
will be determine by what pill, 4, 6 or 8, is drawn by the fast

on the pill that is drawn. The other two will receive $10 each. The Car
Smart Auto Sales will pay $100 to the heat winners, $50 for second and
$25 for third. The 25-lap $1,200 to win feature line up will be
determined by the heat finishes. www.clevelandspeedway.com
PROMOTION IDEAS: Track chaser Randy Lewis reports from Sherman County
(KS) Speedway – Most heats had 1-3 spins that caused yellow flags.
There wasn’t much passing. I was happy to see the track enforced a
“two spin and you’re out” rule. The only thing better than that would
have been a “one spin and you’re out” rule. Why do you think the Boone
Nationals are the “cat’s meow” of modified racing? They have a one
spin and you’re out rule!
PROMOTION IDEAS: When are short track series going to realize that
sometimes the only way to make shows interesting is to have double-file
restarts throughout the feature. We won’t name series names guilty of
being fond of the single-file restarts, but the drooling fans in the
grandstands should be a primary indicator of what we’re talking about.

PROMOTION IDEAS: BOWL WITH THE ARCA BOYS
Race fans in the vicinity of the ARCA race at New Jersey Motorsports
Park (last) Friday have the chance to go bowling alongside some of the
ARCA drivers. Sounds hokey, sure, but perhaps some other short track
series can take note. Instead of your touring series showing up to the
track Saturday morning, race Saturday night and be long gone from town
by the time the sun comes up the next day, maybe get the surrounding
community involved and make some new fans, so – gasp – people actually
show up to your races! http://www.speed51.com
PROMOTION IDEAS: From the upcoming Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta Oct.

display in front of the Fox Sports Grill starting at Noon at Atlantic
Station near downtown Atlanta on Tuesday Sept. 30, and a real pit stop
demonstration will be staged by one of the American Le Mans Series
teams between 5:30 and 6:30 pm. … from 7-9 pm Mike Bell’s popular
motorsports show, Speed Zone, will be broadcast live from Fox Sports

PROMOTION IDEAS: This week will also feature the Annual Krewe du Ya
Ya’s appearance. A large group of pink haired beauties will be
interacting with the crowd. As in previous years, their presence makes
for a lot of fun as they spread the awareness and seriousness of the
fight against Breast Cancer. (5 Flags Speedway)
PROMOTION IDEAS: This weekend, the UARA-Stars Late Model Stock Car
tour will be hitting Lonesome Pine Speedway (VA), where all eyes will
be fixated on one of the tightest point battles in all of short track
racing. The top five in UARA points are separated by just 59 points.
What better way for the fans to experience the Lonesome Pine event than
with no visual distractions. That’s right, UARA has mandated that all
teams park their rigs outside the track, allowing the fans to see the
drama unfold without having the big rigs block their view. Most tracks
in the Northeast don’t allow infield rig parking, which is probably at
least partially why front-gate numbers for Northeastern tracks are far
higher than those in the South. Perhaps this idea can catch on in the
South so fans can have a truly great experience at the track.

in time going into turn one and he got into us. I don’t think that he
did it on purpose. We went around for a spin and all I could think was
there was no way that I am going to get my spot back.” Track officials
made the call using their “protect the leader” rule and put Colangelo
back in front, and he cruised in the final laps to get his first win.
Colangelo is part of Mark Martin’s driver development program. (Thanks
