Sunday’s “race” was further proof of NASCAR’s abject failure as an effective motor racing sanctioning body when it comes to deeper issues than fattening their bankroll. This is largely a function of their suppression of open dialogue amongst the considerable brain trust that a prosperous motor racing enterprise invariably draws together. Though the preeminent engineering minds in motorsport remain queued up in Formula One and Le Mans spawned prototype racing, there is a tremendous collective of experienced, savvy engineering professionals at the dials of the Charlotte epicenter of American motorsport technology. There is one reason, and one reason alone that their ideas never see the light of day….they are prohibited from going public with any brainstorming they do without NASCAR approving and/or censoring it, not to mention patenting and prospering from it.

Now, they have brazenly attempted to use their bully pulpit to censor the broadcast media by pressing for the firing of three distinguished employees of another company….multiple Winston Cup Champion Dale Jarrett, WC Championship crew chief and former team owner Andy Petree, and Dr. Jerry Punch, the award winning commentator that was instrumental in leading their golden goose to the promised land. And for what?? For displaying a remarkable grasp for the obvious and giving it voice during the race broadcast. This, atop the sham that the Talladega “race” was seems to be finally exposing the crumbled foundation of this once great sport. They can’t censure Ryan Newman’s honest and accurate assessment without risking the ire of his team owner Tony Stewart, whose defection from the circus would rattle it to its core, so perhaps hes safe for now.

This attempt to manipulate the media is very ugly, but nothing new. It shows no respect for the drivers, the teams or the fans, who are all supposed to accept the party line and like it. If they are bright enough to see the writing on the wall and stop monopolizing the glory and cash, they sure as hell haven’t displayed it in recent years…What a shame..
